Possible Idea For Epilogue
From our audience feedback we gathered that the audience found it quite hard to understand the narrative of our video. A way to resolve this we decided to come up with an epilogue that hints to viewers the continuation of the narrative which would hopefully make the story easier for the audience to understand. The epilogue involves the man she meets at the bar leaving the bar and then the woman's henchman behind him walks up to him and puts his hand on his shoulder, hinting to the audience the fact that he is the next one to die.
Last Minute Changes to Final Piece
For one of the parts of the narrative, we had to film in a bar in order to show how our main character manipulates men to get what she wants. However, due to timing issues we weren't able to film in an actual bar so we had to shoot in Grace's house and try to make her kitchen look like a bar. We have had to use camera angles and effects in order to hide the fact that we were filming in a kitchen.
Audience Feedback

Changes to DigiPak
Our original plan for the digipak was to have six images in order to fill a basic template for our digipak. Our images were good however in order to get a higher level we had to create a larger 8 sided template with a folding case which opens up into 3 other pictures. We have kept the black and white theme and have also included our own logo called Wolf Productions.

Risk Assessment For Filming
For the graveyard scenes we are outside, this means the weather could potentially effect our ability to both film and transport equipment. To avoid this we need to make sure that we check the forecast before filming the graveyard segment.
For the stage scenes and mirror scenes we are inside a venue where only our group is present and therefore it should go smoothly. The only thing we need to ensure is being looked after is our equipment and that there are no electrical hazards such as open wires.
Lastly, the bar scenes could be done either at a social event or when the place is empty; if it is during a social event that we decide to film we must be aware of other people and how they may potentially damage our equipment or interrupt our filming obstructing us from completing our task. If we do it when the area is quiet we will have less to worry about.
Album Cover Photos
As a group we have come up with a few album cover options, we used a certain style that other R&B artists use where the artist is the key focus of the cover with the artists name in a simple font but not necessarily bold. This is creates the impression that the artists is seen as confident this is because the fact that the album cover only really contains a picture of the artists tells us that they do not need anything else to get people to recognise the artist and to buy the album. Here are our final few options of our album cover:

Our Album Name
As a group we decided that we would originally choose 'Gansta' for the name of our album as it is the name of our main song on the album. However we wanted to research for other names for our album as we thought that there would be a better name that would suit our artist and music genre. We looked at other related artists such as Beyonce and Rihanna and looked at their album names.
We came up with these names and got friends and family to vote on what they would prefer, here are our results:

Digi-Pack Research
As part of our coursework, we have to come up with a digi-pack design, we weren't too sure on how an RnB digi-pack design so we have decided to research previous RnB designs used by other artists.
One example of an RnB digi-pack is Rihanna's 'Loud' album, from this digi-pack we have noticed that the font used tends to be very basic and easy to read, this could be so it catches they eye of the customers in the shops of which these digi-packs are sold. We have also noticed that the artists name is more or less always on the front cover of the album, this could be as a sign of confidence as confidence is a key theme in an RnB song and music video. We have also noticed that in the centre of the inlay/leaflet there is a picture of the artist printed out across three pages, I believe this is used because it keeps the digi-pack interesting and artistic which gives customers another reason to purchase this product.

Useful Shots to Use in Our Video
In our music video we are using shots which require a car and looking through a car window, we weren't too sure on how we should film these shots so we decided to gather some research in order to find the best shot and angle to use. We looked at Selena Gomez's 'Same Old Love' which included a couple of 'in the car shots, they all seemed to be from outside the car, looking in through the window. They have decided to focus in on the window in order to capture the reflection of the lights in the window and in the raindrops on the window. We believe that this could potentially be a useful shot of which we could include in our video as it creates a nice effect.

Audience Research
We have decided that it would be a good idea to gather some research form those who aren't involved with our video, we can then get non biased opinions across about our video so therefore we can get a good response from our video once we show people.
One way we have decided to gather this information is by creating a questionnaire which includes personal opinions on the RnB and Pop genres and what they expect and what to see in music videos of that genre and also what they like and dont like about the music videos involved around that genre.
By gathering this information we can use it to keep note on what people would like to see and to avoid anything that they would not like to see int he music video, this then can help us create a final product that pleases the audience.

Mirror Shots
Our video includes a series of mirror shots and in order to get the best looking angles and shots we have gathered some information from other music videos that we could use in ours.
In Justin Timberlake's song Mirrors they seem to take the shot at a slight low angle but also keep the person in focus whilst the reflection in the mirror is slightly blurred but also remains in focus still.

There are also other mirror shots that use lighting to create a dark shadow across the side of the persons face so we are unable to find the identity of the person until we look in the mirror, in these shots the reflection is in focus more than the person itself.

This music video is particularly good with filming mirror shots as they use various techniques which we could use in our video, one of which includes a superimposed image placed over the top of a reflection in the mirror in order to support the narrative of loving someone you've lost which fits in rather well with our narrative.

Possible Locations to Film
As a group we have looked for suitable locations that we believe would be good for us to use for filming some of our shots. Grace has found a great studio in Stansted Mountfitchet where we could use the mirror for a few of our shots, these include the mirror shots that we have decided are going to be definitely used in our video. We have also decided to use the Newport Graveyard in order to film our graveyard shots which is involved with the videos narrative. We have yet got permission to use the church and the graveyard but hopefully we will be able to get that soon. Our narrative also involves a scene based in a bar, as we are limited in the amount of possible places we are finding it quite difficult to find a suitable bar and get permission to film inside it.
Possible Names for Our Artist
As a group we have decided to come up with a name for our artist, we want the name to be similar to most names that are associated with the RnB genre for example Rihanna and Beyonce. Here are a few examples:
- Lyla
- Lhani
- Nyla
- Jasmine
We hopefully will be able to come up with a suitable name for our artist.

Uses of Black and White Filters in Music Videos
As a group we have decided to have a black and white filter throughout, this is mainly due to a limit in lighting equipment, I have decided to have a look at a few videos that use the black and white filter and see how it looks when the video takes place in various areas and times. Beyonce's 'Sorry' uses a black and white filter throughout the video, this use of the filter makes it much easier to create shadows and various different light tones that would look good in our video as our videos narrative covers a rather dark topic.

Useful Narratives used by Other Artists
One other narrative that we have come up with was the idea that the women would be seen as the dominant figure rather than the stereotype of which the men are seen as the more dominant figures. The artist Pink uses this narrative in her video 'Please don't leave me' where she is in an abusive relationship with a guy and the video tells us the story that no matter how much she abuses him and hurts him he'll always stay with her. However at the end of the video she ends up being far more hurt than her lover due to her own actions whilst she was trying to hurt him. From this video we have gathered information from the narrative which we think would be a good idea to use in our music video. This is because the lyrics in our chosen song tell a story about a girl who needs a man to do everything for her, the lyrics also depict a slight sense of this psychopath who may have killed her previous lover due to the fact that she did not get what she wanted.
Costume Conventions of an RnB Music Video
Male
Smart/Smart casualThe majority of R&B music videos nowadays have male artists dressed in smart/smart casual clothing. This could be to represent class or status in society. Artists such as Drake, Chris Brown, Usher, Ne-Yo and many more all follow the Smart/Smart casual look.
Tattoos Tattoos are a big part of R&B culture again, with the majority having lots of tattoos all visible to the public. This could be used to show creativity and independence from other artists. Even if two artists sound similar, the tattoos and personalities they have could set them apart from each other so much that they wouldn't be seen as similar anymore.

Jewellry Jewellery is one of the most conventional piece of clothing in both R&B and Hip-Hop genres. In every R&B video you see, some sort of jewellery, whether that be a watch, a necklace, or an earring, the artist will have some form of jewellery, showing wealth and status in society.
Women
Classy/Very Little clothing Depending on the sub-genre of the song, and the song itself, the women in music videos are usually dressed in accordance to the song lyrics or narrative of the music video. Women in the videos generally wear classy but revealing clothes, making them attractive to the males, who are the target audience for the conventional R&B music video.
JewelleryAgain, women also follow the idea of having jewellery in the music videos, whether they are the main artist or just an actress. This catches the eye of the male, which is who the target audience is, therefore doing its job in making the target audience watch the video, even if it is just because of the women, and not the actual song itself.
Updated Plan
Performance
- (camera shot) Singing in the mirror (used from Amy Winehouse's Back to Black), with pictures of men around the mirror, (lyrics: i'm f*cked up, i'm black and blue).
- Singing in drama studio, using own lights (Grace's lamps).
- Black and white filter throughout.
Narrative
- Bar- use his credit card to separate drugs.
- Graveyard- (lyrics: "I need a gangster who loves me better...").
- Puts flowers on multiple graves (used from Amy Winehouse's Back to Black).
- She has her own chauffeur who lights her cigarette (used from Beyonce's haunted) and holds her umbrella.
- Using black car (Kate's Dad's).

Useful Aspects of a Music Video to Use in Our Video
For our music video, we have been looking at other similar songs and videos in order to get an idea on what we should include in the video and how to use it.
One of the videos we have looked at was Back to Black by Amy Winehouse
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJAfLE39ZZ8
One of the key aspects in our video that could be an issue is the lighting, in Amy's video she uses a black and white filter in order to suit the topic of the song and in order to make it easier to maintain the low key lighting used in her video. We believe that we could use the same technique of having a black and white filter over the top as we aren't able to supply ourselves with the high quality expensive lights.
The video has a very similar topic which includes a well suited narrative, in Amy's video the narrative includes a funeral and Amy is seen to be the widow of a wealthy man. In our song the lyrics 'I need a gangster to love me better' has the implications that her lover may have died, as a group we have decided to use a similar narrative to this. Amy's video is an amplification narrative video where the video is split between performance and narrative, this is seen to be the most popular type of narrative video for our RnB/Pop genre. It is also much easier for us to produce as we have a limited budget and amount of professional technology.
The video includes a number of interesting shots and angles that we believe would be good for use to use in our video, for an example in Amy's video there are a few shots where she's singing in the mirror. We thought as a group that it would be a good shot to use because it gives out the intention that her backs turned and she wants to hide her emotions however the mirror shot allows us to see her true emotions that she doesn't want us to see.

Narrative
Narrative is the way the story is told or happens. An open structure is one that means that it has no final ending; the story is left open. A closed structure is one that means the story is concluded, usually satisfactory. An interactive structure is one that means that the story is not fixed and will change depending on different factors.
Andrew Goodwin stated that there were three different ways in which the music video can connect back to the song itself.
These are:
Andrew Goodwin stated that there were three different ways in which the music video can connect back to the song itself.
These are:
- Illustration
- Amplification
- Disjuncture
Illustration: Where the song bases the video around the lyrics in order to express them in visual form.
Amplification: Creative and artistic statements performed through the lyrics, usually a combination of narrative and performance.
Disjuncture: Tries to create a new set of meanings, usually the videos don't make sense in order to create the artists image.
Disjuncture: Tries to create a new set of meanings, usually the videos don't make sense in order to create the artists image.
Narrative structure can be split into 3 simplified categories, these are:
- Linear: Follows a line (story) till the end (e.g. Taylor Swift-Wildest Dreams).
- Episodic: Start and ends, broken up into sections (e.g. Taylor Swift-Bad Blood).
- Circular: Goes from start to middle to end/start (e.g. Schoolboy Q-That Part).

Target audiences suited to our genre of song
As a group we have decided that our chosen song falls under the RnB genre, from this we can gather information about the target audience we have to impress with our music video. From own knowledge and little research I already know that people who are aged between 15 and 25 tend to prefer to listen to RnB music compared to people aged over 30.
One example of this is Drake, Drake's music falls into the RnB genre quite easily with his style of music and music videos, from own knowledge I know that people aged 15-25 listen to drake as he is a very modern artist and seems to follow all the recent trends in fashion and culture. I also know that the majority of people who go to his concerts are mostly aged 15-25.
This is because Drake supports the RnB stereotype and gives his audience what they would expect to see, especially in his music videos. For example in the song 'Hotline Bling' the music video involves Drake alone dancing with neon lights in the background. This abstract style of video suits the RnB genre as he has modernised his music video by using the bright neon lights to represent the party lifestyle which teenagers and young adults tend to have. His song with Rihanna 'Work' also represents the RnB genre as the video is highly stereotypically RnB. This is because it objectifies women and has that nightclub theme.

Our Chosen Song
This is the song we have chosen for our coursework:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPDw4MH6hjQ
We decided to go for this song because we could gather a well suited narrative to go with the lyrics, we have decided to go for a story involving an abusive relationship which could perhaps be where the women is the abusive person in the relationship and that she gets a high out of hurting people. We also thought of a nightclub theme where the woman would be singing on stage and would have a male audience and throughout the video she would use her sex appeal to distract the audience from the fact that she was slowly killing them and so at the end the club if full of dead bodies.

Why do genres change?
Some artists often change genres or try to blend two genres together for many reasons, one reason for this could be to follow a trend, for example the artist 'Chip' used to be involved with hip-hop and pop songs, whereas now that 'Grime' music has become more popular over the last few years he has been involved in more 'Grime' music to gain popularity and to follow a trend. Another reason artists the genre of the music they produce is to change their image and to attract a larger audience. An example of this is Justin Bieber, his first music was a form of 'Cheesy Pop' with songs like 'baby' and now he's got older he's now trying to move into the 'RnB' genre.

Possible Genres of Music to use for My Video
For my music video i have come up with a few possibilities, these are as follows:
- Rap
- Hip-Hop
- Indie Rock
I believe that these genres of music would be good ideas for a music video as the sort of videos that are involved with this sort of music tend to be not as heavy on editing and special effects that are used in pop and dance music videos. They also include a variety of different camera techniques that would be good for me to develop my skills in using the camera. Genres such as 'Rap' have relatively simple music videos which allows me to have the ability to create my own version as I have a much smaller budget and limit on equipment.

Preliminary Task
For our preliminary task we decided to choose a song that had a video that would be easier to do but could still include different techniques to express our knowledge and skill of producing a music video. We chose to do 'Hello' by Adele as it includes various different angles and shots in order to create a story to back up the lyrics. We chose a 30 second segment of the video to reproduce, this segment included various different camera angles and shots for example there are a few close ups and long shots of which we could copy in order to develop our understanding and knowledge of how a music video is produced.

Analysis of ScHoolboy Q - That Part
Concept
- Q is showing his lifestyle of drugs and money through the use of camera and editing
- He mentions about his relationship with the police and how he can get away with anything
- The video takes place on a school bus and in a mansion with various different types of lighting
The Video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ_DHRI-Xp0
Symbolic Storyline
- At the beginning of the video, it shows Q with a few others wearing plain skin coloured masks, this could symbolise that they've had to hide their identities due to trouble with the law or it could be use as a way of intimidating people watching.
- The lyrics "me no compensate with the feds" could symbolise how they have the power over the law and they believe that they could perhaps use their money to get their way through any situation.
- The lyrics "i just want the paper" shows their obsession with money and that they are willing to do anything that leads to them becoming rich.
Camera + Editing
- Opening medium low angle shot of schoolbus to represent Q's trademark, a 'nostalgic' filter is used to fit in with the theme of school and school buses.
- The next shot is a low angle shot of a man wearing a plain skin colour mask, this is used to make the man in the shot to look more dominant.
- They use a dark blueish filter in order to match the slow steady beat of the song along with its slightly unusual melody.
- There is a panning close up shot of three men, two of the men wearing the mask and Q in the middle not wearing a mask, smoking a cigar. The fact that he's in the middle causes the audience to focus more on Q than anyone else in the shot, this therefore shows control and dominance.
- Before he starts singing, the camera sways heavily from side to side and eventually finishes at a low angle shot just at the time he starts to sing. This could represent the effect of drugs as when you are under the influence of drugs your body cant really control itself.
- It then cuts back to the school bus where Q is amongst a few girls dancing on the seats of the bus, this argues against the innocent representation of a schoolbus and this therefore shows us that Q has the power to do whatever he wants as he has the power over everything.
- When the music starts to have a heavier beat, it cuts back to the men and Q dancing, however their dancing is not similar to a rehearsed production, its more independent and free. There are no sudden movements in their dancing as it matches the speed of the music. Q is shown in the center again which tells us that he is the dominant figure in the video.
- The lyrics are repeated along with the similar dancing and are however slightly out of time with the cutting rates which supports that disorientating theme.
- When the camera cuts to the schoolbus, Q is dancing whilst singing and in the background the girls are still which causes are focus to be fixed on Q, the camera also moves back and forth keeping the same angle on the beat of the music.
- During the dancing segment it quickly cuts to Q sitting alone in a room with a surreal green and orange lighting to make the video more disorientating. However Q continues to repeat the same dance style in order to match with the music and to make it look like its normal to us.
- It switches back to the same shot of him on the bus with the girls behind him with the moving camera and then quickly cuts to a low angle shot of Q getting in the face of one of the masked men. This also makes Q the dominant figure in the video.
- When the music begins to slow down again it cuts back to the green and orange lit room with a shot of a girl which starts off with a high angle shot and the camera slowly moves downwards to finish off at a slanted low angle shot. I believe they did this to get attention from the viewers due to the fact that a girl is shown as a sex symbol.
- The Camera cuts back to Q approaching a house, as soon as Kanye West begins his segment the camera shows Kanye opening the door to Q and the camera follows him through as he shows you round.
- The camera remains at the same level, this could symbolise a POV shot where you play the part of Q following Kanye. The fact that Kanye makes eye contact with you most of the time also supports this.
- The next shot is seen to be in slow motion as Kanye leads you into a room where there is bold red lighting and a stripper on a pole. This could be used to symbolise power and how money can get you anything you want.
- After you go through the red room the camera speeds up time and shows Kanye's unusual style of dancing being sped up, this increases support of the disorientating theme of the video.
- As Kanye finishes his segment the camera cuts as soon as he shuts the door to begin Q's segment.
- The blue filter is used as the lyrics are repeated along with the same dance style, it then cuts to the stripper on the pole, filming in reverse as the money surrounding her floats upwards instead of falls, this continues to fit the abstract theme of the video.
- The camera then changes to Q on the bus with men and women behind him dancing, on the edges there is a 'trippy' effect which represents the use of drugs and how your vision changes and becomes unstable.
- During this segment the camera is flipped to make it hard for people to focus and uncomfortable close up shots are used to make the audience feel intimidated. Q is always shown in focus and remains the center of attention throughout the segment.
- To finish the video, it cuts to the camera tracking round Kanye dancing and singing in front of the school bus. The camera also shakes violently for a very short period of time to continue the abstract effect.
Sound
- Throughout the video the music never stops, this could represent the lifestyle of these people where they never feel like they're living a real life.
- The melody used in the clip is very slow and contains various different volumes and pitches in order to disorientate the audience.
- The lyrics "all i do is profit" tells us that their main aspect in life is their money and wealth and how they are seen as powerful figures due how much money they have.
- The lyrics "i don't compensate with the feds" means that they don't have time to worry about the law as they believe they have more power than anyone else and they wont let anyone get in their way.
- The lyrics "beggars cant be choosers" tells us that they believe that you have to work hard to get rich and take risks as that they don't think that people who beg to get what they want should have the amount of power that they do.
- The lyrics "had the paparazzi doing backflips" suggests that Kanye has the power over them and has the ability to tell them what to do other than them telling him what to do.
- At the end, Kanye's voice becomes distorted, this supports the disorientating them of the video.
Lighting
- Apart form the opening scene and the closing scene there was no natural lighting, this could create the impression that they live their lives in an unnatural way compared to normal people, this could be due to the money and drugs they're involved with.
- The blue lighting is used to support the dull melody and pace of the song, the colour of lighting changes to natural and a predominant red when there are uses of women being used as a sexual object to attract the attention of the viewers.
- There are faint flashes of light throughout the dancing segments in the clip, these are to the beat of the music and they can also represent the use of drugs and the lack of control of your senses.
- The lighting remains rather low key, this could be because it represents their dark lifestyle and how they live in the night and remain separate from everyone who doesn't live their dangerous lifestyle. The low key lighting also makes the people in the clip look far more intimidating and dominant as its harder to see who they are.
Costume and Props
- In the video, some of the men are wearing skin colour masks, this could be because they are hiding their identity, maybe because they are in trouble with the police or other people.
- They could also be wearing the masks because they are trying to look intimidating and this then adds to the theme of making you feel uncomfortable and disorientated.
- The girls in the video are wearing revealing clothes in order to show sex appeal in order to attract the attention from the audience, the fact that the girls are hardly seen on their own shows us that they could be used as objects and a sign of wealth as in the song Q relates to having girls as being a sign of wealth.
- In the video, Q and the other men are seen smoking, this could be a way of looking intimidating towards the audience.
- Q is seen smoking a cigar which is a reinforced stereotype of a wealthy man.
- There is the use of a BEATS product which has been used in many other music videos, it is used to promote the company for an exchange of money.
Colour
- Throughout the video, there are uses of various different bright and bold colours, for example when Kanye shows you round the house, there is a red lit room which blocks out any other colour, the uses of these colours could be used to interpret the 'drug like' effect as they mention in the song that drugs play a big part in their lives.
- Blue colours are used in the video in order to suit the style of the song and the setting as the song has a slow tempo and they are hardly shown outdoors.
- When they're all on the bus there are uses of various different unnatural colours, they are seen as over saturated which tells us that you could be seeing this from the artists perspective which adds to the surreal them of the video.
Facial Expressions
- In the video, the men rarely smile and keep a straight and serious facial expression, this could be because they want to look intimidating, this is because they want people to take them seriously and not to see them as a joke, (however this could be hard as Kanye West is involved in the video).
- When the girls are shown dancing seductively in the video, they don't look like they are enjoying themselves, this supports the fact that they are seen as objects and are mentioned in the lyrics as a sign of wealth. It almost makes the audience feel like they are forced to perform these acts however the sexual attraction overpowers this.
Setting
- In the video, they use an empty room to film most of the video, the place seems rundown which symbolises that although they are wealthy, they still live a rough life evolved round violence and drugs.
- In some parts of the video, they are in a school bus which is used as a trademark for Q as on the top of the bus it says 'schoolboy' not 'school bus', the school bus is also used as a challenged representation as you don't expect to see parties on school buses with adults.
- In the video, Kanye shows you through a rather large house which symbolises wealth as Kanye raps about how you have to work hard to get rich and how beggars don't deserve to live the high life.
